Ph.D. Visiting Students Scheme

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) offers a diverse range of internship opportunities. These internships cater to both IIST students and external applicants. For those outside IIST, options include summer internships, year-round internships and projects, internships under national schemes, and the Ph.D. Visiting Students Scheme, providing hands-on experience in cutting-edge science, space science and technology research, and humanities and social sciences. Meanwhile, IIST students can opt for credited internships that integrate academic learning with research and RD activities of ISRO centers/industries/institutes of national repute or pursue non-credited internships that offer flexibility and exploration. These opportunities empower students to build expertise, network, and contribute to innovative projects, fostering growth and excellence in space science and technology.

Application Procedure
  • IIST offers avenues for collaborative research for Ph.D. students from other institutions through the Ph.D. Visiting Students Scheme.
  • The student can find the IIST Faculty with matching/complementing research areas. With the endorsement of his Ph.D. supervisor and after mutual agreement with his supervisor and the faculty at IIST, the student can apply through the portal on the IIST website, which will remain open year-round.
  • The application requires a detailed work plan to be carried out at IIST.
  • Faculty at IIST will endorse the applicant’s visit and forward it to the internship committee for approval.
  • The student will receive the confirmation letter from the Dean of Student Activities for planning the visit.
Eligibility
  • Ph.D. students affiliated with an Indian institution, university, or college will be considered for visits lasting between 1 and 3 months. The student has to submit an Endorsement Certificate for the visit from the student's parent institution.
  • Please note that filling up the contact details of the research supervisor is mandatory.
  • The detailed research plan, duration of the visit, and intended use of IIST facilities, such as laboratory equipment, must be provided.
Fellowship, Accommodation, and ID Card
  • There is no fellowship, no travel support, or daily expenses for the visiting Ph.D students.
  • Students have to pay a nominal amount of Rs 100 towards certain administrative charges when they visit IIST for research collaboration.
  • IIST doesn’t provide hostel accommodation for the visiting Ph.D. students. The students need to make their own arrangements for accommodation. However, students can avail themselves of the IIST hostel food by purchasing food coupons in advance.
  • It is mandatory for the visiting student to go through the photo ID verification and security check while arriving at the main gate of the institute.
  • After entering the campus, the visiting scholar can meet the senior administrative officer in the administrative building to collect a temporary ID card. The ID card will enable access to various facilities like the library, canteen, etc., and also to enter IIST from outside.
  • The ID card must be surrendered upon completion of the visit or at the end of the approved visit period to the Administration Section.
